Free Zone Security Demanded
Entrepreneurs with warehouses
and offices in the Free Trade
Zone in Colon, Panama, have
demanded redoubled security
measures to stop the wave of
robberies there.
A business press note stated
that the Free Zone general
manager's office could not
remain passive before last
week´s theft of money and
merchandise worth 150,000
dollars.
Considered the second most
important free trade zone in the
world after Hong Kong, Colon (50
miles north of the capital) has
occasionally sheltered
ill-gotten goods and even
illegal drugs.
Severo Sousa, president of the
Association of FTZ Users, said
they are aware that robberies
will not be completely
eliminated but they hope to
reduce the numbers.
Free Trade Zone vice manager
Juan Fidel Macias announced that
a new closed-circuit TV system,
costing 2.5 million dollars,
will soon be in place.
The system will control every
street, sidewalk and building
with cameras, sensors and alarms
24 hours a day, seven days a
week, Macias concluded.
