Riteve
Will Take In Your Old Tires
Don't know what to do with that
used tire? Bring it to Riteve.
That's right, the vehicular
inspection company will accept
used tires at all of its 13
stations in an effort to reduce
the spread of Dengue fever. And
for free.
In conjunction with the Caja del
Seguro Social (CCSS), Riteve
will take your old tires off
your hands free of charge. The
CCSS calls the tires a "five
star hotel" for the mosquitoe
that is carries the Dengue.
To date this year there have
been 1.355 reported cases of
Dengue - 229 cases less that
last year, CCSS officials point
out - and four cases of
Hemorraghic Dengue. Alberto
Sáenz, head of the CCSS, says
that municipalities have agreed
to collect the old tires and
take them to Riteve.
Residents can the tires directly
as well. The collection campaign
will focus on a different
community each week, telling
local residents where to take
the old tires.
There are estimated some 800.000
used tires in all parts of the
country, which are a major
breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Officials say that the careless
discard of old tires is not only
caused by individual car owners,
but also by unscrupolous tire
retailers who will discard them
in empty lots and ravines at
night without care for the
environment and health risks.
