Guatemalans Urged to Rise Up
Guatemalan farmer, indigenous, educator and social organizations called for a national social uprising in view of government failure to respond to a set of socioeconomic demands.

"We have presented nine demands before the government, but they have not given any answer. This has been a dialogue with deaf people," National Teachers Assembly coordinator Julio Solano said.

Solano added that teachers decided to join the National Farmer and Indigenous Coordination (CONIC), the Union and Popular Action Unit, and other organizations in the national uprising after Holy Week.

CONIC leader Pedro Esquina described the authorities´ presentation of a report as a mockery of the Maya popular movement, giving no solution to any of their demands, which were presented last week during a great march staged by tens of thousands of people on the capital´s main streets.
