Colombia, UN to launch joint
anti-drug campaign
The Colombian government and the
United Nations will launch a
joint anti-drug campaign in
London on April 27, targeting
European cocaine consumers,
Colombian Vice President
Francisco Santosa said on
Tuesday.
The two sides take the
initiative because of the rising
number of drug users in Europe,
and they are seeking to spread
the word that drug users are not
only damaging their health but
also generating violence and
financing terrorism in Colombia,
Santos said.
Sandro Calvini from the UN
anti-drug office said that any
time a person in France,
Germany, Spain or Italy snorts
cocaine, "they are killing a
Colombian."
The drug trade is the single
largest source of funds for the
country's two insurgent groups,
who produce an average of 550
tonsof cocaine per year to sell
outside the country.
