Fans Pessimistic About Cup
BERLIN (AP) -- German fans are
pessimistic about their team's
chances at the World Cup, a new
survey showed Tuesday.
Only five percent of German fans
believe their team will win its
fourth World Cup title,
according to a poll in Sport
Bild magazine.
About 29 percent believe Germany
will get knocked out in the
second round, and another 10.8
percent believe the hosts won't
make it past the group stage.
Germany plays the opening match
of the World Cup against Costa
Rica on June 9 in Munich. It
then faces Poland and Ecuador.
The final is scheduled for July
9 in Berlin.
Despite the grim outlook, 60.8
percent of those questioned said
they thought Germany coach
Juergen Klinsmann was taking the
right approach, while only 30.5
disagreed.
Klinsmann has been criticized
for experimenting with strikers,
maintaining a home in the United
States and refusing to name a
No. 1 goalkeeper.
The survey of 1,040 German fans
over the age of 14 was conducted
by TNS Sport. No margin of error
was provided.
