Panama-Cuba Returning Sight to Poor
The first Panamanian beneficiaries of free ophthalmology care in Cuba are traveling Wednesday to Havana to begin Operation Miracle, as the two countries agreed.

Panama´s Health Deputy Minister Dora Jara confirmed to Prensa Latina that her country´s joining OM would cover operation of 12,000 patients annually if local needs required it, explaining there are 48,000 Panamanians to care in four years.

On November 23, OM was presented in San Isidro neighborhood´s health center, in this capital, by First Lady Vivian Fernandez de Torrijos who said the project would benefit the poorest sectors with top-quality free service that would allow for operation of cataracts, squinting, pterygium and ptosis or drooping eyelid.

For the First Lady this is a generous gesture of Cuba in line with agreements reached by both nations´ Health ministries.

Official sources said the first Panamanians to fly to Havana will be accompanied by the government´s figures, among them the Health Minister and Deputy Minister, Camilo Alleyne and Dora Jara, respectively.
