Hunger Haunts Nicaragua's
North Atlantic
Hunger is threatening
inhabitants of Prinzapolka in
Nicaragua's North Atlantic
Autonomous Region, in the wake
of Hurricane Beta and rat
plague-hit crops.
Local authorities gave the
warning Wednesday and requested
that the regional and central
governments urgently send food,
drugs and farm supplies.
In Prinzapolka, 237 miles
northeast of Managua, people go
hungry to bed and wake up
hungry. The time to eat is the
time to cry, El Nuevo Diario
paper reported.
Children are the worst-hit. And
to cap it all, there are plagues
of rats and slugs devouring the
very few crops which resisted
the hurricane, the daily noted.
According to local authorities,
the few provisions sent by the
central government following the
hurricane were consumed by
evacuees in just four days.
The municipality has a
population of 21,158, mostly
Miskitos indigenous and other
ethnic groups.
