Colombia to borrow money to
buy Brazilian warplanes
The Colombian government said on
Thursday it would borrow 234.6
million US dollars to buy 22
warplanes from Brazilian
engineering company Embraer,
following approval from the
Parliamentary Committee for
Public Credit.
Colombia will borrow 35.2
million US dollars from French
bank BNP Paribas and 199.4
million dollars from Brazil's
National Bank for Social and
Economic Development (BNDES) to
pay for the aircraft.
The Committee also authorized
the government to borrow up to
250 million dollars from the
World Bank for state spending.
The Super Tucano aircraft
replace OV-10 Bronco and A-37
Dragonfly planes. Colombia's Air
Force (FAC) will retire the
olderplanes.
The FAC awarded the contract in
August after a controversial
bidding process during which all
bidders apart from Brazil's
Embraer dropped out.
