The Nicaraguan press reported
failure of the Summit of the
Americas, held in Mar del Plata,
Argentina, where disagreement
prevailed over George W. Bush´s
Free Trade Agreement of the
Americas (FTAA).
"Fiasco in the Summit of the
Americas due to FTAA" is the
title that La Prensa daily used
Sunday as headline on its
international page.
The conservative newspaper added
that the meeting of 34 Latin
American countries concluded on
Saturday in the Argentinian
beach resort left a bitter
flavor with most participants.
Two concepts were opposed to
each other in Mar de Plata, one
in favor of the FTAA, boosted by
the United States and Mexico and
another one represented by
Venezuela and MERCOSUR, who want
to review the neoliberal model
before taking new steps, the
daily explained.
El Nuevo Diario said the result
of the Summit of the Americas is
a defeat for US president George
W. Bush, who left Argentina
bootless.
