Colombian army seizes large
amount of ammunition from rebels
Colombian army has seized half a
million assault rifle bullets
and nearly a ton of explosives
in a southern jungle, an army
officer said Sunday.
The ammunition, allegedly
belonging to the rebel
Revolutionary Armed Forces of
Colombia (FARC), was found in an
underground chamber in the state
of Caqueta, said Carlos Alberto
Ospina.
He said it was the largest
amount of ammunition ever found
in the country, but did not say
when it was discovered.
FARC is Colombia's largest rebel
group with 20,000 fighters. Last
year President Alvaro Uribe
launched a military action
against FARC in southern
jungles. Currently some 18,000
army troops are operating in the
area, searching for rebels, drug
labs and arsenals.
