Mexican University President Criticizes Attempts to Hush Scientists
Mexico´s National Autonomous University (UNAM) President Juan Ramon de la Fuente slammed efforts to hush up local scientists and denied the sector would be developed that way.

Juan Ramon de la Fuente asked if anyone believed problems would be resolved by preventing scientists from expressing their views.

The situation proves why Mexico has lamented the flight of talented young scientists while important research projects are only assigned minimum resources, de la Fuente denounced.

His criticism followed National Science and Technology Council (CONACYT) officials´ attempts to censure a speech by Mexican Science Academy Rector Octavio Paredes, in presence of Mexican President Vicente Fox.

CONACYT founder Enrique Florescano asserted the council entitled itself to silence its representatives instead of supporting scientific centers and researchers.
