Chilean army commander rules out resignation for tragedy
Chilean Army general Juan Emilio Cheyre Wednesday ruled out his resignation for the tragedy that left 27 soldiers dead and 19 more missing in southern Antuco Volcano, local press reported.

Cheyre said he has never had "more support and solidarity" than any time in these days, in reference to a statement by Defense Minister Jaime Ravinet and other political figures.

"Never have I had more understanding than in these days, never have I had more recognition for what I have done than in these days," he said.

He added, "I do not have the right to get tired, nor to lower my guard, due to the support I have received in handling this situation."

Earlier, Defense Minister Jaime Ravinet met Cheyre and expressed confidence in him, despite the calls for Cheyre's resignation.

Cheyre also said he backed the appointment of a visiting judge to probe the disaster.

On Friday, the army general fired three officers from Regiment 17 which maneuvered in Antuco Volcano, Andes, when a snowstorm hit that caused the heavy military loss of life.

The sacked officers were under investigation for the command responsibility in the maneuvers.

The tragedy has shocked the country and sparked harsh criticisms against the army.
