Stealing Electrical Almost Cost Man His Life
Stealing electrical and telephone wires has become a lucrative business for a group of enterprising thieves.

In the past year, thieves have made off with the precious wire containing copper from various parts of the city, leaving in some cases, areas without electrical power or telephone service for hours.

However, yesterday, a man known as "Chespi" paid dearly when he received a 7.600 volt discharge when he climbed a pole with the intent to steal electrical cable in downtown San José.

Witnesses say the discharge threw the man about 4 metres from the post and burned his hands, arms, legs and neck.

According to the Compañía de Fuerza y Luz (FyL) - the power and light company - this is not the first time this sort of thing happens.

Each year the FyL estimates that it loses between 7 and 8 million colones (us$15 - 17.000 dollars) to this type of robbery.

The 30 year old man in yesterday's occurrence is in a delicate condition at the San Juan de Dios hospital in San José and will be facing criminal charges when he recovers.
