Flooding Rivers Cause Haste
Evacuation in DR
The National Emergency
Commission in Dominican Republic
has reported Sunday that recent
heavy rains have caused rivers
and streams to flood areas,
damaging homes, commerce and the
evacuation of thousands of
people.
Although there have been no
victims so far, thousands of
houses have been affected in the
municipalities of Janico,
Salcedo, Cotui and in Santiago
de los Caballeros, the country´s
second largest city, including a
distillery warehouse.
Brigades of the Regional
Emergency Commission warned on
possible flooding in the
northern communities due to the
rise of Yaque del Norte River´s
level, as a consequence of the
drainage of Tavera-Bao dam.
Losses in agriculture,
especially in tobacco
plantation, have been
considerable.
The Emergency Center recommended
residents near risk zones to
take all the necessary measures
against unexpected flooding, and
the National Meteorology Office
alerted north, northeast,
southeast and southwestern
regions on possible landslides
in those areas.
