Inflation and Poverty Increase
The signals that the economy of
Costa Rica is emitting make it
foreseeable for a hike in
inflation and poverty this year,
as compared to the preceding
ones, according to analysts,
such as Miguel Gutierrez, a
member of the State of the
Nation board.
The Central Bank
foresees that the index of
consumer prices will surpass the
10 percent goal that had been
set for the year. The president
of the Central Bank Francisco
Gutierrez said this is a major
source of worry for the
institution.
University of Costa
Rica researcher Juan Diego Trejos said that the data point
to the fact that the number of
poor families is going to
increase this year.
According to
estimates, middle-income
families dedicate 40 percent of
their income to buy food, while
lower-income dedicate 60
percent.
In a survey by Unimer
for the daily La Nación, 44
percent of the respondents said
that their income is not enough
to meet their needs, while 47
percent pointed out that they
barely make ends meet.
