More Hits on Drug Trafficking
Shortly after 3pm yesterday,
agents of the Estupefacientes
del Organismo de Investigación
Judicial (OIJ) - Drug Squad -
made another hit on the drug
trafficking trade, this time
with the detention of a
Colombian in Canoas de Alajuela.
In the area of Río Frío, five
other Colombians and one Costa
Rican had already been arrested
for transporting some 47 kilos
of cocaine.
The police raid on Canoas netted
officials a score of appliances,
a satellite telephone and a
vehicle which they believe make
up part of the tolls used by the
traffickers.
In raids of the homes of the
other suspects, police
confiscate us$13.000 dollars in
cash, ¢6 million colones,
jewelry, a score of documents
and a 9mm firearm, all to used
as evidence against the men.
The arrests yesterday is a
result of more than month of
undercover work by the police,
that had been tracking a
shipment of drugs from Colombia,
through Panama and by land
making it's way north to
Nicaragua.
In a separate and unrelated
operation, police arrested 4
others - a Costa Rican, a
Panamian, a Colombian and a
Nicaraguan, who, according to
Jorge Rojas, director of the OIJ,
formed part of a group that
moved drugs into and out of
Costa Rica.
Police confiscated some 390
kilos of marijuana and 64 kilos
of cocaine in that bust.
In less than a month, police
have now dented the pockets of
drug traffickers with the
confiscation of almost 3.500
kilos of cocaine, 458 kilos of
marijuana and 17 kilos of
heroine, with a street value of
more than us$40 million dollars.
