Street Duel Results in Death
In a passionate dispute over a woman, two Nicaraguans settled their dispute in a duel of "machetazos" in the middle of the street, resulting in the death of one of them.

The victim was identified by Guapiles police as Pedro Antonio Pérez, 40 years old, who died on the scene, in the town of Cariari, cantón de Pococí.

The dispute broke out just before midnight, when the two men decided to air out their "dirty laundry" in the middle of the street, both claiming to be in love with the same woman. Both men, according to witnesses, claimed to be worthy of the woman's love.

Following the verbal argument, the men decided to solve the problem with machetes, the same machetes they used in their work in the banana fields of the area.

Witnesses told police that the winner of the duel had and advantage over his opponent, being younger and had a sharper machete. The two men went at it in the middle of the street, until one was dead.

The Fuerza Publica was called immediately as the fight broke out, but one man was already on the ground when they arrived. They called for the Red Cross, but the man had was already dead.

Following statements by witnesses, the Fuerza Publica was quick to apprehend a 35 year old Nicaraguan, identified only by his last name, González Leiva, who as charged with the death of his countryman.

González had hidden himself in a nearby house, but when police were closing in, he had no choice but to give himself up.

The name of the woman was never mentioned, according to witnesses, and is not a suspect in the death of one of her lovers.
