Venezuela requests extradition of Cuban terror suspect
The Venezuelan Congress called on the United States to arrest and extradite a Cuban-born militant accused of blowing up a Cuban civilian jet plane, local press said Saturday.

Venezuela's Congress, in a resolution released Saturday by the press, demanded the US Congress clear up its position on terrorism and on the case of Cuba-born Venezuelan citizen Posada Carriles, who is seeking asylum in the United States.

The Venezuelan Congress said that the Organization of American States (OAS), the United Nations and the international community are all joining efforts to capture and extradite Posada.

On May 3, Venezuela's Supreme Court ruled that the government should seek extradition of Posada from the United States.

The Cuban government holds Posada accountable for several attacks, including the 1976 bombing of a Cuban airliner over the Caribbean Sea that killed 73 people aboard. Havana has repeatedly demanded the United States send Posada to Venezuela to face trial.

Posada was imprisoned in Venezuela and but never convicted. He escaped from the jail in 1985 with the support of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States, according to local authorities.
