Texas Residents Die in Fishing
Boat Mishap
Funeral services are pending for
two former Brenham, Texas,
residents who drowned in a
boating accident off he coast of
Costa Rica.
David and Carole Mahnke were
killed in the accident
Wednesday, about 15 miles south
of Quepos in the Pacific Ocean.
The Mahnkes were in Costa Rica
on vacation when they decided to
go on a fishing trip, according
to reports.
Investigators said the couple
were on a fishing boat with the
captain and one crew member when
the vessel was struck by a large
wave and rolled sharply.
All four on board were dumped
into the ocean.
The crew survived, but the
Mahnkes, who were not wearing
life jackets, drowned.
According to preliminary
reports, prosecutors in Costa
Rica are looking into whether
the boat captain should be
charged with negligence and
manslaughter.
The Mahnkes were longtime
residents of Brenham before
moving to Cape Carancua Bay,
Texas.
David Mahnke owned Texas
Financial, providing investment
advice and insurance to numerous
residents in the Coastal Bend
area. Mrs. Mahnke was a
volunteer at the

handled by Brenham Memorial
Chapel and are pending until the
bodies can be brought back to
the United States.
