Pilar and Igancio Leave
Telenoticias
WOW! Yesterday, in the early
afternoon hours, came the news
that co-directors of Channel 7's
Telenoticias, Ignacio Santos and
Pilar Cisneros Gallo, quit. A
letter of resignation was
received by René Picado Cozza,
owner of Canal 7.
The news came as a surprise to
all at the offices of the
station in La Sabana, that
prompted a meeting of all the
heads of the television station
- Picado family members - to
analyze the effect the
resignation will have at the
news desk.
The resignation, according to
some sources, is irrevocable and
final. They quit the television
station and won't be coming
back.
Rumours are floating that the
couple quit the news team over
the revelations by the
television station of the
Caja-Fischel and ICE-Alcatel
scandals that the Organismo de
Investigación Judicial (OIJ)
took seriously and prompted the
detention of former presidents
Rafael Ángel Calderón and Miguel
Ángel Rodríguez, who are being
accused of corruption.
Both Pilar and Ignacio were
targeted by critics following
the breaking of the scandals and
possible ties to the companies
that were being investigated,
including questioning a trip to
France, the home of Alcatel.
In addition, the Fiscal General
de la República questioned some
telephone calls that leaked
information to the the couple.
And if that wasn't enough, the
couple received numerous death
threats.
All of this and perhaps many
other unknown factors
contributed to the resignation,
which was duly accepted by the
television station, some say so
as to put out any future
problems as the cases against
the former presidents and
associates moves forward and
near the end of the
investigative stage.
The resignation is effective on
September 30, at the end of
their current contract.
