Brazil, Paraguay to work on border disputes
Brazilian and Paraguayan
government officials will meet in Asuncion on Thursday to resolve the
recent disputes caused by smuggling and illegal immigration along their
borders.
Brazil has tightened crackdown upon smuggling from the Paraguayan city
of Ciudad del Este recently, which led to reprisal policies against
illegal Brazilian workers in Paraguay.
The Paraguayan authorities deported 150 Brazilians without legal
immigration documents on Tuesday.
A few weeks ago, Paraguay asked the Brazilian government to increase the
purchase quota of a Brazilian tourist in Paraguay from 150 to 500 US
dollars. Thousands of Brazilians cross the border to buy Paraguayan
goods, most of which are sold in the black market in Brazil then.
The Brazilian authorities said they will take measures to reduce
bureaucracy in supervising its citizens in Paraguay. About 300 out of
the 8,000 to 10,000 Brazilians living in Paraguay are illegal residents.
