Bus Fares and Gasoline Go Up
Today, just in time for the Semana Santa
holidays, bus fares go up and tomorrow gasoline prices take a hike.
More than 600 bus routes will see their fare increase automatically, on
average 5.6%, following the publication in the official newspaper La
Gaceta. The rate hike was approved by the Autoridad Reguladora de los
Servicios Públicos (ARESEP), the government agency that regulates public
prices and services.
Bus fares will increase anywhere from ¢22.91 colones to ¢240 colones
(us$0.048 cents to $0.51 cents) on most of the bus routes that cover the
entire country.
And, come tomorrow, gasoline prices increase ¢11 colones, going from
¢370 to ¢381 colones (us$0.79 to $0.814) for a litre of super, ¢353 to
¢364 colones (us$0.754 to $0.777) for a litre of regular and from ¢264
to ¢273 colones (us$0.564 to $0.583) for diesel.
The cost of a US gallon of super gasoline will be $3.25 ($3.62 for a
Canadian gallon(
This is the second increase in the price of gasoline this year.
Gas prices around the world
Think you pay a lot for gas?
Perhaps you'd prefer to live in Venezuela.
Gasoline prices in Costa Rica, which have recently hit record highs, are
actually much lower than in many countries. A few countries, like
Venezuela have prices that are far lower.
The main driver of price disparities between countries is government
policy, according to AirInc, a company that tracks the cost of living in
various places around the world. Many European nations tax gasoline
heavily, with taxes making up as much as 75 percent of the cost of a
gallon of gasoline, said a spokesperson for AirInc.
In Venezuela, on the other hand, oil is produced by a government-owned
company and local gasoline prices are kept low as a benefit to the
nation's citizens.
