Strike paralyzes Buenos Aires airport
The Buenos Aires Airport was brought to a
standstill Thursday as local airline workers went on strike to protest
against possible layoffs after the entry of Chilean airline Lan Chile in
the local market.
The strike was headed by employees of state-owned airline Lafsa, which
will be acquired by Lan Chile after an agreement signed Friday between
Lan Chile and the Argentine government.
Ricardo Cirielli, undersecretary for Commercial Air Transportation, said
Lan Chile is a firm that can guarantee the stability of all workers for
three years.
The strike in the airport delayed the landing or take-off of planes on
several national and international flights. During the strike, only a
plane from Uruguay managed to land.
In addition to the strike, some workers of six aviation trade unions
demonstrated outside the airport, blocking road traffic.
In accordance with the agreement between Lan Chile and the Argentine
government, the branch of the Chilean firm in Argentina will be called
Lan Argentina.
Lan Argentina has promised to hire all 870 Lafsa employees, but they are
afraid that they could lose their jobs in the future. They are also
opposed to the control of Lafsa by Lan Chile without a licensing
process.
