Central American Job Generation
Under the Spotlight
Representatives of governments,
employers´ organizations and
trade unions are meeting here
from Tuesday until Thursday to
address job generation in
Central America.
The so-called Tripartite Forum
for Job Generation, called by
the International Labour
Organization (ILO) wants the
topic to be fundamental to all
economic policies in Central
American countries.
Creation of jobs constitutes an
urgent social need in a region
where most of the 35 million
inhabitants live in poverty, and
there are 1.5 million
unemployed.
In addition, 11 million people
are underemployed in Central
America in minimally productive
activities in the informal
economy, the ILO reported.
The meeting gathers Ministers of
Labour, head offices of trade
unions, and business groups from
Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador,
Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica,
Panama and the Dominican
Republic.
Director General of the ILO,
Juan Somalia, is attending the
forum to emphasise that the
world's job crisis is the most
urgent political affair of the
times.
The Tripartite meeting coincides
with a summit of presidents of
Central America, Mexico and
Colombia, who will analyze
regional security and
integration problems, among
others.
