Venezuelan President decrees
Salary Rise for Military
Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez
announced Friday a 50 to 60 per
cent salary increase for
soldiers and officers to become
effective as of July 1.
The announcement made during the
commemoration ceremony of the
Battle of Carabobo that decided
national independence back in
the 19th century, the head of
state said the decision is aimed
to "do justice to the dignified
and brave soldiers of the
nation."
From the beginning of next month
the regular troops (sargents and
soldiers) and cadets will have a
salary increase of 60 per cent,
while low-ranking and career
officers will receive increases
of 50 per cent.
In his address today from the
Tiuna Fortress in this capital,
Chavez denounced the existence
of military plans against
Venezuela and warned that the
country is ready to face any
attack and fight the time that
is necessary in defense of the
country´s sovereignty.
