Zheng Zhi converted a penalty kick in the 45th minute after Xie Hui was brought down in the penalty area, and Xie scored 10 minutes into the second half off a pass from Wang Liang.

China, eliminated last year in World Cup qualifying, got its first win since Zhu Guanghu took over as coach in March. The teams tied 2-2 in Beijing on Sunday,

Costa Rica is third in the final round of World Cup qualifying in the North and Central American and Caribbean region with seven points, six behind Mexico and five back of the United States. The top three teams earn berths in next year's tournament.
