US dismisses Ecuadorian request
to limit ex-president's actions
The US Embassy in Ecuador
rejected the government's
request to limit actions of
former Ecuadorian President
Lucio Gutierrez, saying he is a
tourist in the United States,
the local daily El Expreso
reported Saturday.
Ecuadorian Foreign Minister
Antonio Parra Gil sent a letter
to the embassy on Thursday
asking for controls over
Gutierrez, particularly
restrictions on making public
statements in the United States.
The embassy's spokesman Glenn
Warren told the newspaper that
they do not have to comment on
the request. In the case of
Gutierrez, he could make any
remarks in US territory as
others do, Warren added.
The Foreign Ministry has not
made any comments on the US
decision. A commission is
expected to be formed and travel
to the United States for the
Gutierrez case.
