Colombia, US seize over 2 tons of cocaine in Pacific Ocean
he Colombian and US authorities on Thursday seized 2.1 tons of cocaine in a maritime operation near Colombia's Pacific coastline, the Colombian navy said.

The operation, in accordance with a nautical cooperation agreement signed between the two countries, took place in the international waters of the Pacific Ocean, some 225 km away from the harbor of Tumaco, southwest Colombia, it said.

The boat was intercepted after 10 hours of chasing by Colombian naval and air forces, said the Colombian navy.

Four Colombians were arrested and have been put at the disposal of the US authorities.

According to the Colombian navy, the illicit cargo, valued at nearly 63 million US dollars, had been bound for a central American country.

Including this confiscation, nearly 55 tons of cocaine have been seized by the Colombian navy this year.

Colombia is the world's largest cocaine producer with an average annual output of some 580 tons, accounting for 90 percent of the world's total. Most of the cocaine produced in Colombia is smuggled into the United States and Europe.
