Washington Pressures to Destroy SAM-7 in Nicaragua
The US government threatened again Sunday to keep all military aid to Nicaragua blocked until the Central American country destroys all its SAM-7 surface-to-air missiles.

US Ambassador Barbara Moore confirmed the threats in declarations to El Nuevo Diario daily, saying the military assistance had stopped when the destruction of the Russian missiles was halted.

Nicaragua´s President Enrique Bolaños has promised Washington to get rid of all the SAM-7 this year.

For observers, Moore, who will be replaced in her post in the coming days, wants to pave the way for total destruction of those weapons, claiming they could fall into terrorist hands.

She said the SAM-7 "it is not a weapon that Latin America need"- She did not explain, however, why the Pentagon supplied Honduras with sophisticated fighter planes and gave away arms to other Central American nations.

The diplomat insisted that she will find the way to resume destruction of the missiles.

The White House recently accused the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) of being "the hindrance" in the unicameral Parliament for the elimination of the SAM-7.

FSLN deputy Edwin Castro said, however, National Assembly decisions are passed to favour the Nicaraguans, not to "satisfy US desires."
