Wisconsin National Guard will
help destroy mines in Nicaragua
Members of the U.S. National
guard will be destroying mines
in this Central American nation
along with the Nicaraguan army,
Defense officials said Tuesday.
Juan Umana, technical secretary
for Nicaragua's National
Demining Commission, told The
Associated Press that 10 U.S.
experts with experience in Iraq
would be removing mines July
24-29 in northern Nicaragua.
He said the help is part of an
accord signed last year between
the Nicaraguan government and
the Wisconsin National Guard.
The mines are leftover from the
conflict in the 1980s between
the governing Sandinistas and
the Contra rebels, supported by
the U.S. government.
Nicaragua has destroyed nearly
85 percent of its mines, but
some 22,000 still exist.
