No Fireworks at Zapote.
Literally
The tradition of Zapote kicked
off yesterday at noon, including
the running of the bulls, but
with no fireworks. Literally.
César Gamboa, director General
de Salud (health), confirmed
yesterday that fireworks will
not be permitted in the fair,
especially in closed areas and
in the redondel (the bullring).
The prohibition stems from an
incident last year when on
December 25, when Beberlyn
Valverde Artavia, suffered first
and second degree burns when
fireworks where set off at the
start of the bulls.
Mark Sandoval, president of the
Comisión de Festejos Populares,
lamented the Salud decision,
saying that the fireworks are
part of the tradition.
Sandoval will use the option of
setting off fireworks from the
adjacent parking lots and
private property near the
redondel.
The running of the bulls or "toros
a la tica", which in Costa Rica
is more like standing in front
of the bulls and then running
for your life as the bull
charges, is a tradition of the
Zapote (the biggest) and the
town fairs,
The Zapote (San José) fair will
end is less than two weeks, then
during the next two months,
towns around the country will
hold similar, albeit smaller,
fairs.
