Misery Sweeps through South Mexico
A release from the Ministry for Social Development says extreme poverty affects between 31.4 and 48.3 percent of the population in 9 of 32 Mexican states.

The most critical situations are in Chiapas, Oaxaca and Guerrero, followed by Yucatan, Campeche, Veracruz and Puebla and the central states of Hidalgo and San Luis Potosi.

The report "Setting Low Income and Inequality on the Map of Mexico" claims northern Nuevo Leon, Baja California, and the Federal District as the states having the lowest poverty rates.

A recent report from the private sector Center of Economic Studies stated poverty is becoming endemic, with half the population unable to meet their basic needs.

Experts from the institution calculated that 53.2 million of the 105 million Mexican populace live below the poverty line
