Mexico Has 24 Million Poor
Children
A UNICEF release revealed there
are 24 million poor children in
Mexico despite its relatively
powerful economy.
UNICEF Representative Yoriko
Yasukawa said the figure
represents more than 60 percent
of the child population aged
6-11 years.
Mexico was rated 6.53 on a
10-point general scale with
Nuevo Leon (8.20) the highest,
and 19 of 32 states with less
than five, like Chiapas (4.47).
Life expectancy and access to
education for a child in Chiapas
is 50 per cent less compared to
the rest.
In addition, around two million
children do not attend to school
and more than three million
under 14 years are victims of
child labor exploitation.
Also, one in every five children
is undernourished and the figure
is four-fold higher among the
indigenous population.
