Mercosur leaders to discuss
setting up common parliament
Presidents of Mercosur countries
will talk about the creation of
a common parliament Parlasur at
their summit slated for Dec. 8-9
in Montevideo, diplomatic
sources said on Monday.
The creation of Parlasur has
been studied for years, and
although there are certain
different opinions about it,
what is more important is that
the institution will be put in
motion, said the same sources.
Leaders of Argentina, Brazil,
Paraguay and Uruguay are
expected to analyze at the
meeting a proposal of the
project presented by a joint
parliamentary commission, made
up of officials from the four
countries.
Uruguayan President Tabare
Vazquez, the rotating president
of Mercosur (the Common Market
of the South), is one of the
major proponents of Parlasur.
It will be a great achievement
for Mercosur if Parlasur is
created, Venezuela is ratified
as a full member and the Fund
for the Strategic Convergence of
Mercosur is created at the
summit, said the officials.
