Demand: Eliminate Foreign
Monopolies
The World Federation of Trade
Unions (WFTU) demanded the
elimination of the current
domination by transnational
monopolies and the plundering of
the peoples´ resources for use
in wars and in the arms race.
The demand was part of
Thursday´s report on the
situation of the trade union
movement in the world and the
activities of the international
organization presented by
Alexander Zdrarikov, general
secretary of the WFTU.
Zdrarikov made the presentation
to the 15th WFTU Congress that
began Thursday in Havana with
the participation of 534
delegates and participants
representing 248 organizations
from 72 countries.
In his statements he considered
that the strategies for economic
development and elimination of
poverty could only be successful
if UN decisions to promote the
"disarmament for development"
are implemented.
He noted that according to UN
statistics 250 of the world´s
financial tycoons have more
wealth that all the assets of
half the population of the
globe.
Zdrarikov emphazised that the
International Monetary Fund and
the World Bank insist
governments privatize social
security and reduce budget
deficits, removing their social
and economic sovereignty.
And along with that surge
colossal tax evasion by the
richest and huge budgets for the
military-industrial complexes,
he said.
The union leader concluded the
WFTU statements by declaring
solidarity with Cuba and
rejection of the US blockade
against her, as well as calling
for the liberation of the Cuban
Five imprisoned in the United
States and support to the
Bolivarian process in Venezuela.
