Four people die in Brazilian jail riot
A riot at a prison in the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais killed two policemen and two inmates, police said Sunday.

The riot started Saturday evening when a group of gunmen attacked the Governador Valadares Jail to help some inmates escape.

The authorities tried to prevent the escape, but about 400 inmates in the prison took advantage of the chaos by staging a riot. A shootout ensued, leading to the death of two individuals on each side.

Police and jail authorities regained control of the prison on Sunday, but only after the rioting inmates burnt mattresses and destroyed parts of the jail roof to attack guards with the tiles.
