Monday Not a Holiday!
All public and private sector workers are expected to be at the job on Monday as usual, this according to the Ministerio de Trabajo (Labour Ministry).

The confusion stems following a recent change in the labour laws that would pass holidays that fall during the week to a Monday. Howver, no provision was made if the holiday fell on a Saturday or Sunday, like the May 1 holiday this Sunday.

So, according to the Labour Ministry , Sunday is the holiday and it will be celebrated on Sunday and not on Monday. If the holiday had been on a day other than Sunday, then workers would have an extra day off, but not in this case.

However, all workers who are required to work on Sunday will be paid double their normal salary for the day.

The new law covers only those holidays April 11, July 25,  August 15 and September 12 is they fall during the week.

May 1 is "el dia del Trabajador", a day filled with ceremony and parades. It is also a day when the president gives his report to the Legislative Assembly.

Union leaders have vowed that there will be demonstrations against the Tratado Libre de Comercio (TLC) - free trade agreement - but all demonstrations will be peaceful.
