Gutierrez to formally ask for political asylum in Brazil
Sacked Ecuadorian President Lucio Gutierrez on Tuesday will present his formal request for political asylum to Brazilian Justice Minister Marcio Thomaz Bastos.

The Brazilian justice ministry said that as Gutierrez is a former president, the document will be personally analyzed by Bastos.

The Brazilian authorities said that if the petition is accepted, Gutierrez will have to respect the rules of not taking part in political activities and informing the Brazilian justice ministry of any change of residence and possible departures from the country.

Any asylum permission for Gutierrez, his wife Ximena Bohorquez and their daughter Viviana Estefania will be valid for two years and can be renewed.

Gutierrez is the third renowned politicians living in Brazil asa political refugee.

The two others are Paraguayan ex-president Alfredo Stroessner and Haitian colonel Albert Pierre, who was once the head of the Secret Police of Haiti.

The ex-president of Ecuador and his family are now living in a hotel of the Brazilian army in Brasilia, Brazil's capital, where they arrived Sunday aboard a Brazilian air force plane.

Ecuador's Congress sacked Gutierrez for dereliction of duty and appointed Vice President Alfredo Palacio as the new president.

Gutierrez was accused by political rivals of attempting to amass power by replacing Ecuador's Supreme Court. Brazil offered to grant asylum to the deposed president on Thursday.
