Cost of Rice on the Increase
Everyday Costa Ricans are faced
with the increase in the cost of living.
This week alone, the cost of electrical power was announced, along with
the cost of gasoline (though not yet approved) and now rice.
In a tough meeting, rice producers and the government reached an
agreement that will increase the price of rice a whopping 14%. What this
means in real terms is that producers will be paid each 73.6 kilo sack
of ¢10.182 colones (us$21.66) instead of ¢8.926 colones (us$18.99).
Martha Castillo, Ministera de Economía, Industria y Comercio (MEIC),
said that the increase was agreed to after studying the proposal by the
producers.
The effect on the retail price has yet to be determined.
