Election of OAS Secretary General Postponed
The Organization of American
States (OAS) has put off the election of a new Secretary-General until
next Monday, following the death of Pope John Paul II, OAS sources
announced.
President of the Permanent Council of OAS Alberto Borea said the
postponement will allow Foreign Ministers to attend the Supreme
Pontiff´s funeral in the Vatican City, Italy.
The successor for former Costa Rican President Miguel Angel Rodríguez,
who resigned from his post as OAS Secretary General in October 2004 over
a corruption scandal in his country that landed him in jail, was
scheduled to be chosen on Thursday.
Candidates for the post are Chilean Minister of Interior José Miguel
Insulza, Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Ernesto Derbez, and former
Salvadorian President Francisco Flores.
