Central American presidents to meet on war
against crime, oil price
The presidents of four Central
American countries met Friday in Tegucigalpa, Honduras' capital, to
analyze the regional combat against gangs and the international
crude-price increase.
The one-day special summit of the Central American Integration System (SICA)
was attended by President of Honduras Ricardo Maduro, President of
Guatemala Oscar Berger, President of El Salvador Elias Saca, and
President of Nicaragua Enrique Bolanos.
Maduro, rotating president of SICA, called on the meeting to analyze
social and economic phenomena affecting the region.
The meeting initially aimed to make plans for an integrated combat
against youth gangs, regionally known as Maras, but the summit
participants decided to include the issue of the energy crisis caused by
high oil prices on the international market.
The Honduran president urged the petroleum-producing countries to take
urgent measures to reduce the price of crudes on the international
market.
