Pacheco
Criticizes Legislature for Stalling Tax Reform
Pacheco's government has been pushing hard to get the new tax laws in
place so that is can immediately start collecting tax revenue that it
badly needs.
Pacheco, in a tour of small rural communities, told
residents that the government is 'scraping the bottom' to make
investments in education and housing for the poor.
He said that the country needs the approval of his new tax reform to
finance social programs and better roadways in the small communities.
The president made his comments following the inauguration of the Liceo
de Finca Alajuela, in Osa,which will house about 180 adolescents in that
southern zone community.
Satellite
Phones in Rural Areas
The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad
(ICE) has announced that it will use satellite telephones in place of
fixed land lines in rural areas. The new service should be available by
the end of this year.
The service will permit customers to place their calls just as if they
were in the San José Metropolitan area.
The hope is that not only residential customers will benefit from this
service, but also businesses, especially those in the tourism industry
who sometimes cannot communicate with their agents or employees in
outlying areas.
Costa Rica and Cuba Tie 2-2 in World Cup Qualifying
Douglas Sequeira of Costa Rica scored the first goal in the 13th minute,
and Lester More tied the game from a penalty in the 22nd.
Costa Rica went ahead again thanks to Alvaro Saborio's 43rd-minute goal,
but More drew Cuba even with the only goal of the second half, in the
76th, in a World Cup qualifying match on Saturday.
Cuba travels to Costa Rica for the return leg on June 20 in CONCACAF
qualifying.

- Taxi drivers are asking for an
increase of 10% due to the latest increases in gasoline costs. A
formal request will be presented to the Reguladora de los Servicios
Públicos (ARESEP), the public body that regulates all prices for
public services, like taxi and bus fares.
- A decision was made to not to permit any type of
promotional advertising in this year's "romeria", the annual walk to
Cartago on August 2. Advertisers begin putting up their promotional
material, including illuminated signage, in July. This year only the
Basilica Los Angeles will be permitted to place advertising along the
side streets of the Basilica. The decision was not well received by
the Cartage Chamber of Commerce.
