Colombia extradites 15 suspected
drug pushers to US
Fifteen suspected Colombian drug
smugglers, including three
women, were extradited to the
United States on Tuesday, police
said.
The suspects were handed over to
US federal agents who departed
with the detainees aboard an
official plane from the Bogota
airport.
Eduardo Pineda, a leader of
Colombia's North Coast Cartel,
was among the extradited.
This is the largest extradition
sought by various US courts in
history.
On Sept. 10 and Nov. 3, the
Colombian authorities extradited
14 and 13 drug traffickers to
the United States respectively.
This year, a total of 63
individuals have been
extradited, and most of them
were accused of drug trafficking
by the United States.
Meanwhile, there are 77 other
captured individuals who are
wanted by US courts.
Colombia is the world's top
cocaine producer, with an annual
output of 580 tons. It supplies
about 80 percent of the world's
cocaine market, most of which
ends up in the United States and
Europe.
US fails to isolate Cuba: FM
The United States has failed in
its attempt to isolate the
island, Cuban Foreign Minister
Felipe Perez said Tuesday.
Washington was not able to crush
the humanistic and solidary
spirit of Cuba, which has
established diplomatic and
consular ties with 181 members
of the United Nations, Perez
said at the inauguration
ceremony of the provisional
Museum of the Revolution
Diplomacy of Cuba.
He said about 17,000 students
from 110 countries are studying
in Cuba, which also provided
civil assistance to some Third
World countries.
Cuba has 109 embassies abroad
and 95 foreign missions in
Havana, ,including 10
international organizations,
Perez added.
The provisional museum showcased
the diplomatic achievements of
the Cuban Revolution.
ELN plots supermarket explosion
in west Colombia, says police
The explosion occurring in a
supermarket in west Colombia on
Monday was a terrorist attack
instead of an accident, police
sources said Tuesday.
The explosion, plotted by the
National Liberation Front (ELN),
left three dead and six others
injured as an unknown person
tosseda grenade in the
supermarket in the Choco
department, said the sources,
overriding earlier reports that
it was an accident by a gas tank
sold in the market.
The 4,500-strong ELN is the
country's second largest rebel
group after the Revolutionary
Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
Colombia has been locked in a
four-decade civil war, the
longest in Latin America, in
which government forces, leftist
guerrillas and far-right
paramilitaries fight one
another. The conflicts kill more
than 3,000 people a year.

Venezuela to host world meeting
of intellectuals
The World Meeting of
Intellectuals and Artists in
Defense of Mankind will be
convened on Dec. 2-7 in
Venezuelan capital Caracas, said
the National Culture Council (Conac)
of the country Tuesday.
According to Conac, over 400
experts will hold discussions on
a wide range of issues including
economic crisis, neoliberalism
and media development.
Other topics, such as education,
national identity and
globalization will also be
discussed
