I do not recall Henry David Thorough ever discussing his experience and feelings about mosquitoes, bugs, and other critters. I however, do not like mosquitoes and was hoping that they would not be a problem in the area I choose to live. I had not had any problems with them on my previous visits, but was not sure about all of the months of the year.
We moved into our house on May 5, the rainy season began in June. If there were going to be mosquitoes, we would have them from June to now. Remember, we do not close our windows here and we do not have screens on them so, if there are mosquitoes, they can come right in. The temperature is always about 68 degrees F during the nights so we sleep with a sheet and a light blanket. About every other night from May to July, I would hear one mosquito buzzing around my head. I would whoop him and not be bothered the rest of the night. Since July we have had no mosquitoes during the night. This is really great and much better than in Texas or Minnesota where you could be carried off into the woods by them if you are not careful.
There was about a month when we had a bug, just like a June bug, that was all over the floor every morning. We see various types of spiders from time to time, but we just capture them and release them outside. Sometimes when we walk in tall grass in the mountains we get "chigger" bites so now we just avoid these areas.
We always have many different types of butterflies around and really enjoy watching them.
The worst bug problem is the leaf cutter ants. We have had them attack our orange tree, mango tree and some flowers. They are awesome. They cut a trail to the target plant and can cut nearly all of the leaves and carry them home in a few hours. They do not kill the plant; just whack 90% of the leaves. We also have very tiny sugar ants whenever we leave a spot of food on a counter or on the floor.
I saw one cockroach in a bathroom drawer one night so I got some cockroach hotel poison and have not seen one since.
We have a few bats that roost on the ceiling of our storage room. They are really neat and I try not to scare them when I enter this room.
I am really happy about not having to combat the mosquitoes and other biting insects like we had to in Minnesota and Texas. So this is just one more advantage to living here.
