Spain, Uruguay to Honor Benedetti
Spain, Uruguay to Honor Benedetti
Montevideo -
Mario Benedetti will be honored in
Montevideo on Wednesday as part of a program
sponsored by several cultural centers from
Spain and Uruguay.
Activities include performances by singer
Daniel Viglietti and actress Estela Medina,
who will read some of Benedetti's texts,
while a group of students will read some of
his poems as part of an event to be held at
Spain's Cultural Center in Montevideo.
The event is intended to recognized
Benedetti's commitment and contribution to
the defense of equality and human rights, as
well as his contributions to
Hispanic-American culture and intercultural
dialogue, according to organizers.
Sponsored by the Foundation of Southern
Culture Institute of Spain, this tribute led
by Spanish poet, essayist and novelist
Benjamin Prado started on April 28 at
Spain's National Library.
The homage had been cancelled after
Benedetti fell ill a few weeks ago.
