Loss Of Power
Forces Small Plan To Land On Circunvalación
Costa Rican drivers are accustomed to just
about anything happening on the country's
highways. But yesterday was a little
different, when the pilot of a small
airplane decided to use the Circunvalación
to put down the aircraft.

At 11:53am, Héctor Luis Sosa López, the 21
year old pilot of the small aircraft, TI-ANB,
experienced engine problems after taking off
from the Pavas airport.
He chose the open area of the Circunvalación
between the San Jose Palacio hotel and the
Burger King in La Uruca.
Touching down, the 750 Kg aircraft, with
only the pilot on board, touched the roof of
a moving vehicle driven by Jonathan Blanco
Rodríguez, who says he got the scare of his
life on hearing the clunk of the plan
touching the roof of his car.
Blanco said that he was the only vehicle on
that section of the road at the time, an
area that busy during weekdays.
The aircraft is owned by the aviation school
based in Pavas, the Instituto Aeronáutico
Centroamericano (IACA), the same aircraft
that was landed on the Circunvalación as
well ten years ago. At that time the
airplane was piloted by Nikolai Sergew, a
Russian national, who took down the airplane
near the Monumento del Agua, about 500
metres from yesterday's landing spot.
López, who was racking up air time, took
from the Pavas airport nearby and was about
20 minutes in the air when he felt a
decrease in engine power. The pilot, who
will now be investigated by Aviación Civil,
refused to give details to the press.
