Colombians Criticize Strong Inequality
Medellin, Colombia -
Unfair distribution of wealth in Colombia,
despite broad investment guarantees, was
strongly criticised here in the Peoples"
Assembly.
This is a meeting attended by dozens of
non-government organizations, parallel to
the 50th Annual Assembly of the
Inter-American Development Bank, opened in
Medellin on Friday.
The Social Watch network presented the Human
Rights: the Only Key report, including an
analysis of the country"s situation in 2008,
showing contrasting figures.
In this regard, the document shows increases
in several economy indicators, including the
investment rate, which went from 12 percent
to 28 percent, as well as a decrease in
poverty, with "only" 45 percent of
Colombians in this category.
The text warns that more than a tenth of
Colombians reside in inadequate houses, and
11 percent live in critical overcrowding.
It takes at least two minimum wage salaries
to access the family basket, which entails
two people working in each family, and this
does not occur in most households, says the
report.
The document cites access to health as one
of the most violated rights because of
refused service or poor or late health care.
