Starting in October it may cost ˘80.000
colones to not lose your license or get it
back. The amount is not a bribe but, rather,
the cost of a driver education course that
all drivers facing losing or have lost their
license must attend.
On September 23 this year the full extend of
the new Ley de Tránsito goes into effect,
which, among other items, gives every driver
50 points on their license.
Under the new law, a driving offence will,
in addition to a fine and possible
imprisonment, cost the driver points. An
accumulation of points results in a
suspension of a drivers license for a few
years to permanent for repeat offenders.
The new regulations published this week
proposes that a driver who who has lost 20
or 25 has to take a driving education
course, which includes lessons on driving
habits, safety, the impact on victims of
traffic accidents, drug and alcohol abuse.
The course would be given by Transport
officials and will cost the driver who lost
all his or her points, thus losing their
license, ˘80.000 colones. For drivers who
have lost only partial points, the course
cost is one half or ˘40.000 colones.
In addition to the course cost, there is
˘7.850 to be paid out, the cost of the
drivers test that is mandatory. The proposal
also has provisions for drivers who lose 5,
10 or 15 points, to perform "public
service".
The regulation published on Tuesday now has
a 30 day period for public commentary and
observations, then followed by a public
hearing to discuss the points proposed.
