Bubble Gas Samples To Be Analyzed in Italy
A group of experts have found more bubbles
coming out of the ocean water near the coast
of Golfito following last week's series of
strong earthquakes in the area.
Experts say they have found two types of
gases emanating from cracks in the ocean
floor - methane and hydrogen sulfide - which
will be studied by the Universidad Nacional
(UNA),in Heredia, and the Università degli
Studi di Firenze (University of Florence) in
Italy.
The study will attempt to identify the its
origin.
Samples were taken by experts of the
Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de
Costa Rica (OVSICORI), the Comisión Nacional
de Emergencias (CNE) and the Servicio de
Guardacostas (coast guard) during the
weekend.
So far the emanating gases do not pose a
threat to human life nor marine life.
Experts also detected that the shallow
waters of the Golfo Dulce de Golfito is
about 2 Celsius degrees higher than the
surrounding waters and that although
Hydrogen sulfide gas is toxic, the gas
contained in the bubbles does not pose a
health risk.
