A
Delaware mother is waiting to be reunited
with her three daughters after authorities
tracked down her ex-husband — accused of
abducting them nearly 19 months ago — in
Nicaragua, The News Journal reported.
David T. Matusiewicz, an optometrist, was
arrested Friday morning while dropping his
6-year-old daughter off at a school in a
village near Managua, Nicaragua, the girls'
mother Christine Belford told the newspaper.
A short while later Matusiewicz's mother
Lenore was arrested at her home, where
police found the two other children — Leigh,
6, and Karen, 3.
Belford said she thought her children were
dead, The News Journal reported.
And Matusiewicz told the three girls that
Belford had committed suicide, according to
authorities.
"Well, I am back from the dead," Belford
wrote to The News Journal.
Belford and Matusiewicz were married in
October 2001 and divorced in November 2006.
Matusiewicz and his mother reportedly face
numerous felony charges in the alleged
abduction in violation of a joint custody
order. Matusiewicz also faces federal
bank-fraud charges, The Journal News
reported.
A spokesman for the U.S. marshal's office
would only say they are working with the
Nicaraguan authorities and have scheduled a
press conference at the New Castle County
Police headquarters on Monday. |
